Dear
FableFriends,
Springtime at FableVision
has been full of amazing events, meeting
friends new and old, and sparking creativity
and imagination with our latest classroom
products.
We are thrilled with the wonderful feedback
you have given us on Animation-ish,
SmartMoves and Wings
of EPOH.
You let us know that these products are
making a real difference in your classrooms
and practices, which is the true measure
of their success. Please keep sending
your stories and feedback as we love hearing
from you!
Meanwhile, in our Studio, we have been busy
working on projects with Reading
Is Fundamental to create support
materials for parents, the Girls
Scouts of the USA to develop a board
game that teaches friendship skills, and
Outside
the Classroom to build an interactive
website for educating college-age students
about alcohol awareness.
Lastly, we're pleased to share that Peter
H. Reynolds has been recognized as
a Verizon
Foundation Literacy Champion. Peter
was lauded for his on-going efforts supporting
literacy and creativity, through both
FableVision's mission and his personal commitments
to schools and organizations to raise community
awareness, increase funding, and garner
support for literacy programs.
We hope that spring has brought you the
same sense of wonder, excitement and energy
that we are feeling at FableVision!
Wishing you the best,

Jane Reynolds

Smart
Parents Practicing SmartMoves!
Earlier this spring, FableVision was delighted
to receive a request from Kamehameha
Hawaii Elementary School for 120
copies of Stationery
Studio via
our Class2Home
Program for
their annual Family
Summit, "Spring 'Ohana Summit 2008".
The family summit invited families with
children in grades K-2 to spend a Saturday
to become more familiar with what their
children were learning in school with an
emphasis on writing, artwork, and publishing.
All the parents had an opportunity to use
Stationery Studio and return home with their
own copies! When
parents have the same technology tools at
home, they can reinforce the learning process
and support the classroom activities.
Marcie
Saquing, the Family Parent Educator,
reported back to us that the Family Summit
was a big hit -as was FableVision's Stationery
Studio! Marcie reports: I
had the parents sit at the MAC's that we
have in our learning center. I reviewed
some quick navigation steps and had the
parents all write a quick memo to their
child using the program. We printed
them up right there and they were able to
take it home! It was great!
When we were done with that piece, I introduced
SMARTMOVES
to them! THEY LOVED IT!!
Did you know? If your school has a Stationery
Studio Building License, you can
offer Stationery
Studio to parents at a significant
discount, just like Kamehameha did. Click
here for more information on the Class2Home
Program.

Can
Online Games in the Classroom Reach the
Students We're Leaving Behind?
This
was the question posed by
FableVision's
President, Paul Reynolds and Vice President
Gary Goldberger at this year's
MICCA
conference.
Paul
and Gary captured their audience from
the start and presented compelling reasons
to consider gaming as yet another vehicle
for students to learn. Along with
personal stories, research, fabulous partners
(MIT
and Maryland
Public Television),
and the FableVision
Studio
team, they offered a sneak preview of
a new online game to teach pre-Algebra
in middle school called The
Lure of the Labyrinth.
Paul and Gary issued an invitation to
educators and students to join the game
development team as co-researchers.
If you missed this keynote, there will
be another opportunity to hear Paul and
Gary at NECC
in San Antonio!

Mother's
Day Recipe Book
The
first graders at Dove
Elementary (GrapeVine, TX) have
cooked up something sweet with Stationery
Studio!
This past Mother's Day, Ms.
Katie Neal, Mrs. Strong and Ms. Daugherty
had their students create a special Mother's
Day Recipe Book. They asked each
student to choose a favorite dish made
by his or her mother, and then asked each
student to write how they thought their
mother prepared it. The final collaboration,
with recipes typed into Stationery Studio,
printed and bound to make the book, turned
out to be a delightful treat. Ms. Neal
says, "I do not correct the spelling unless
it is unrecognizable. That is what makes
the recipes so cute!"
With
Father's
Day and Flag
Day quickly approaching, be sure
to check out the Fall
& Spring Holidays and Seasons Add-On Bundle,
which increases
the total number of borders and shapes
in Stationery Studio from 226 to 306 -
created by award-winning children's book
authors/illustrators Peter
H. Reynolds and John
Lechner.
Additional
cross-curricular activities are also included.

| Wings
of EPOH Takes Flight to Rave Reviews
|
|

We are delighted by the overwhelming response
to Wings
of EPOH, our latest addition to FableVision's
award-winning line of character education
products.
Developed by FableVision
in partnership with the Southwest
Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC),
Wings of
EPOH is based on a story by award-winning
author and Holocaust survivor Gerda
Weissmann
Klein.
The animated film version was creatively
interpreted by FableVision
co-founders Peter H. Reynolds and
Paul A.
Reynolds. Along
with creating a social framework for children
with autism spectrum disorders, the DVD/book
curriculum package, featuring the transformational
story of a young boy and a butterfly named
EPOH ("hope" spelled backwards), is being
used to help combat bullying.
One teacher wrote:
I read
Wings of Epoh to my 17 first graders.
As I looked around the room I saw their
eyes were mesmerized and filled with compassion
for the little boy, Matthew. They
kept wanting to join in and share their
own stories. One story told was about
a first grade girl, who used to be in our
class, who has a younger brother with autism.
When we got to the part about the reason
for the butterfly's name, the children gasped
in unison. They thought it was the
neatest idea.
The team of educational experts at SARRC
- the nonprofit, community-based organization
dedicated to autism research, education
and resources for children and adults with
autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and their
families - authored the wonderful activity
guide for the classroom in conjunction with
the DVD.
The collection is part of SARRC's Fostering
Relationships in Early Network Development
(FRIEND) program, which
aims to develop and improve social communication
skills for students in kindergarten through
high school affected by autism spectrum
disorders. Click here

amazing work.

A CLUE® SPOTLIGHT WORD OF THE MONTH - emancipate
|
The
word emancipate comes from the Latin prefix ex
("out of") and the root mancipium, meaning "ownership."
You may be familiar with a form of our word emancipate
from your history class, where you studied Abraham Lincoln
and his "Emancipation Proclamation." This reference,
and the Latin word's apparent reference to being "out
of ownership," should give you a pretty good idea of
the word's meaning today.
Emancipate
your students from rote memorization of vocabulary!
Learn the STORIES behind
the words. Get your FREE
